Dry needling is a pain management technique used by trained healthcare professionals - often physical therapists - to relieve muscle pain and improve mobility. It can also be used with electric stimulation to activate dormant muscles that can cause other muscles to be spasmed and/or imbalanced.
A very thin, solid needle is inserted into trigger points (tight, knotted areas in muscle). This neurological reset can cause a twitch response followed by a sensation of relaxed musculature and sometimes soreness. Dry needling reduces trigger point pain, tension, and improves blood flow in the area.
The needle is very thin and people often do not feel the needle insertion. A feeling of pressure before the twitch response is normal.
Both dry needling and acupuncture use thin sterile stainless steel needles to stimulate the body’s natural healing process by releasing endorphins and other natural pain-relieving chemicals. Dry needling is a Western medicine approach targeting "trigger points" (knotted muscles) while acupuncture is an Eastern medicine approach targeting "acupoints" which are connected to the flow of energy, or Qi. Acupuncture is based on energy flow while dry needling addresses muscle tension at its palpable source.
The Functional Movement Screen (FMS) is a screening tool used to evaluate seven fundamental movement patterns in individuals with no current pain complaint or musculoskeletal injury. The FMS is intended to target opportunities for improved movement in individuals and prevent injury among athletes. The FMS highlights where a patient may have too much or too little flexibility and/or strength. The FMS provides a blueprint for all customized exercise programs - specific to each patient.
